USM's decision to take down the state flag which bore the confederate emblem came after Dylann Roof's massacre of eight African Americans. Immediately, protesters began showing up every Sunday demanding it be returned.

For two years they have waved this flag in front of USM every Sunday, and after the events in Charlotesville in which a Neo-Nazi drove a car into a crowd as a terrorist attack, we can no longer watch silently. Every Sunday, we will be out there across from them to make sure people know that they are welcome here in Hattiesburg, Mississippi and at USM.
